“It took us fifty-odd years to learn that it wasn’t really about what we thought it was about,” says Joi Gresham, Director and Trustee of the Lorraine Hansberry Literary Trust. Gresham is talking about the ending of Lorraine Hansberry's seminal work A Raisin in the Sun, which begins an English tour this month at Leeds Playhouse.
‘You Are Not A Stranger Here,’ the long - awaited new album by Danny & The Champions of the World, will be released through Loose on 18th October. Their seventh studio release and first since 2017’s ‘Brilliant Light,’ ‘You Are Not A Stranger Here’ is the sound of a band exploring new and surprising musical terrain. Produced by Champs keyboard player Thomas Collison and featuring frontman Danny George Wilson’s most compelling songs to date.
The quartet of Zack Borzone (vox), Jack Tobias (synth), Sam Pickard (drums), and Saguiv Rosenstock (guitar) display an innate ability to translate a primitive spirit into a modern form. Born during the lockdown as an experimental project between Borzone and Pickard in Philadelphia, the group expanded as the two moved to New York, adding Tobias for their debut self-titled EP, which was produced by Rosenstock, who was then integrated into the band. That first collection is one of self-discovery, of finding the tools necessary to make songs within the band’s own ecosystem.
In the two and a half decades since the release of this landmark album, the four core members of The Get Up Kids — Matt Pryor, Jim Suptic, Rob Pope, and Ryan Pope — have explored side projects, helmed solo ventures, and held stints in high-profile bands. They’ve also started businesses, found spouses, and raised kids. Still, run into them on the streets of Lawrence, Kansas, these days, and you’ll find that — perhaps beneath a beard — each has retained the high-spirited, unwavering authenticity that fans stood feet from at basement shows before the band’s sophomore breakthrough.
