Trailblazing Premiere and Blue Plaque unveiling

This is the story of three firefighters from Yorkshire, all women all wanting to make a difference, all ahead of their time, all facing challenges beyond fire. From 1939 - 2025.

Join us for a very special evening celebrating the history of our building. To start the evening there will be a blue plaque unveiling. This blue plaque is commemorate the building from fire station to community hub. Followed by the premiere of our new show Trailblazings: Women have always been firefighters.

At Home with the Calverley's: Calverley Old Hall Open Days

Join us for public Open Days at Calverley Old Hall in September 2025 as part of Heritage Open Days. 

Visit the finished, fully furnished Landmark and see the hireable Community Space. Explore the craftsmanship, creativity and care which has contributed to this major restoration project completed in 2024. 

Alongside the new Landmark you will also be able to visit the Community Space which is available throughout the year for all to hire and use.

Heritage Open Day: Burmantofts Pottery

Join historian Lesley Newnham as she discusses  Burmantofts Pottery, the Leeds Victorian ceramics company which rivalled Doulton and Minton.

Burmantofts Pottery employed some of the leading sculptural and architectural names of the age and invented many new techniques and remains collectable today.

The talk will be accompanied by archives from Burmantofts along side ceramics form the collection held at the Discovery Centre. 

 

 

 

Heritage Open Days - The Yorkshire Red Books of Humphry Repton (1752-1818) - talk by Dr Patrick Eyres

Humphry Repton was the successor to ‘Capability’ Brown as Britain’s pre-eminent landscape gardener. He was renowned for inventing the Red Book. This was an artwork for prospective clients that combined hand-written design proposals with theatrical before-and-after watercolour illustrations. Nine were produced for Yorkshire clients. The talk will include Repton’s commission from Earl Fitzwilliam at Wentworth Woodhouse (1791-1794), which introduced him to patronage in Yorkshire.

Heritage Open Days - Leeds Local History Open Day

Let us take you on a journey through the history of Leeds and highlight treasures from our library collections. Pop along to the 2nd floor of Leeds Central Library to explore collections dating from the 17th century in our Heritage Open Day showcase event. Focusing on this year's Architecture theme, we will transport visitors through the history of Leeds and explore the city's buildings and green spaces. Librarians will handpick their favourite examples, from historic maps to beautiful prints and everything in-between.

Heritage Open Days - Heritage Tour of Leeds Central Library

In celebration of Heritage Open Days 2025 we invite you to join us for an entertaining trip behind the scenes of our magnificent Grade II* listed building. Find out about the architecture, history and famous visitors, as well as visiting some secret corners! Tours last approximately 1 hour and leave from the ground floor atrium, outside the Lending department.

Free but booking is essential.

Literature in Leeds: Prose, Poetry and Plays

A community display celebrating Leeds writers, from historical fiction to thought-provoking poetry, and plays written for stage and screen. Featuring objects which have inspired the authors, and exploring some of the independent bookshops in the city and surrounding areas.

Bringing together loans from writers, from notebooks and word processors to items that have inspired them, to writing implements from our own collections, and objects related to themes in their works.

Friends of Beckett Street Cemetery 40th Anniversary Display

Beckett Street Cemetery is one of the oldest municipal cemeteries in England and a Historic England Grade II Listed Park & Garden.

In 2025 the Friends Of Beckett Street Cemetery celebrate their 40th anniversary with a display which gives an opportunity for visitors of all ages to explore aspects of the social history of Leeds from the Industrial Revolution to the Victorian era, and beyond.
