Study Afternoon: Building 19th Century Leeds

Join our curatorial staff for a look at the evolution of buildings in 19th Century Leeds. 

With plentiful hot drinks, cake, fruit and a chance to look at some of our ephemera collections up close. From grand civic buildings to vernacular architecture, we will examine how a Georgian town became a grand Victorian city through images, maps, and written documents.

Smeaton Tour at Temple Newsam

John Smeaton was the greatest civil engineer of the 18th century and founder of the profession in Britain.  

This tour explores the grounds of Temple Newsam for remaining evidence of Smeaton’s pump and ventures inside the house to view the surviving well, not normally on view to the public.

Temple Newsam Rooftop Experience

Explore Temple Newsam House and Estate as you’ve never seen them before.  The experience starts with and introduction to this stunning house and collections – including a visit to the cellars!  You will then go behind the scenes and make your way up to the roof.  Once on the roof you will see spectacular views of the Estate and Leeds beyond.  Learn about the largest external inscription in Britain and view it from a unique angle.  Take photos of the views or simply enjoy this exclusive experience.

Heritage Tour of Leeds Central Library

Tours last approximately 1 hour and leave from the ground floor atrium, outside the Lending department.

Leeds Music History Walks - Black Music in Leeds City Centre, led by Joe Williams

On this walk you’ll discover the history of Black musicians and music culture in the city of Leeds. From visits by American choirs in the Victorian age, through the origins of Carnival and its claiming of space in the heart of the city, to the places where breakdancing took over, and where David Oluwale listened to music, Joe Williams takes you on a journey exploring the importance of Black music and music culture for Leeds.
