The Impressionists are the most popular group in art history – millions flock every year to marvel at their masterpieces. But, to begin with, they were scorned, penniless outsiders. 1874 was the year that changed everything; the first Impressionists, “hungry for independence”, broke the mould by holding their own exhibition outside official channels. Impressionism was born and the art world was changed forever.
CANVAS is a month-long celebration of art and community.
The event will be presented in partnership with Leeds Arts University, showcasing student’s work and highlighting the importance of art and creativity as both a form of expression, and a legitimate career path.

Nick Smith is a graduate from Leeds Art University who was born in Oxford and now lives in Ilkley, West Yorkshire. Having only been painting since 2020, he has quickly found his feet and love for architectural form. He has shown his work at the Ones to Watch 2022 exhibition at Sunny Bank Mills, and also in the Tinker Gallery in Ilkley, Open Gallery in Halifax, Skipton town hall and Fresh space in Hackney Wick, London.
