An image of a Victorian mourning card dedicated to Eliza Clifford, buried in Burmantofts Cemetery, who passed away Feb 6 1896 and was interred 2 days later. The card is a faded white surrounded by a black border. Behind it is an envelope which contained the card, and it has the address JAMES HILLYARD, undertaker, 34 Ellerby Lane, and 4 Charlton Place, East Park Road, Leeds.

Abbey House Museum

Beckett Street Cemetery is one of the oldest municipal cemeteries in England and a Historic England Grade II Listed Park & Garden.

In 2025 the Friends Of Beckett Street Cemetery celebrate their 40th anniversary with a display which gives an opportunity for visitors of all ages to explore aspects of the social history of Leeds from the Industrial Revolution to the Victorian era, and beyond.

Through the documents, photographs and objects left behind by some of the people buried there, this case highlights how they contributed in their own way to the city we now know, before they finally came to rest in Beckett Street Cemetery.

As well as sharing stories from the cemetery, the display showcases the history of the ‘Friends’ group and their ongoing efforts to protect, preserve and promote this valuable historic site.
