Choreographer Jemma Mae Broomhead and videographer Zak Hamza created a participatory community dance video for International Women’s Day 21.

The 2021 theme of International Women’s Day was  ‘Choose to Challenge’, challenging gender bias and celebrating women across the world and their achievements. To celebrate this and to encourage people to move and dance at home, and collectively be a part of something creative and positive. Jemma Mae Broomhead choreographed a dance routine for a community dance video.

An online call out for participants to send in a dance freestyle video of them doing the All Day choreography, which had been shared via an online tutorial, or a video of themselves doing something they could do all day resulted in 63 videos from people aged 5 – 65 years.
The choreography was created for the song ‘All Day’ by music artist Olly Anna who is based in Nashville, USA, as her music is uplifting, family friendly and encourages people to find their inner confidence. Olly Anna and Jemma connected after Jemma created a dance video to one of Olly’s previous songs ‘Write My Story’.

The participants were mainly from Leeds and surrounding areas, plus friends, family and students at Yorkshire Dance, Dance Studio Leeds and RJC Dance, Leeds Beckett University and Leeds College of Art. Several staff members at Dance Studio Leeds and Yorkshire Dance also got involved, and members of Leeds based Roller Girl Gang skating group.

The video has been shared online via Instagram, YouTube and Facebook platforms and has been widely re-shared. Jemma has since been contacted by the official International Women’s Day organisation and has been invited to collaborate and create more dance content to spread awareness of the cause in the future.
