Time Travel through Place-Names: a Sideways Look at the History of Leeds

In this illustrated talk, Emeritus Professor Joyce Hill, will draw upon her linguistic expertise to uncover the deep history of Leeds by showing us what lies behind the names we are so familiar with - the name of Leeds itself, the major streets of the city centre and some of the surrounding areas, separate from the tiny village of Leeds at the time of the Norman Conquest, but very much part of the city today.

The Smalls by Izzy Brittain | Children & Their Grown Ups Festival

The Smalls is a fun, fascinating interactive dance experience exploring the magical microworld of soil animals with small people and their grown-ups.

Many soil animals are tinier than termites and weeny-er than worms, yet the future of our food depends on them.

The time has now come to look down, deeper and defend The Smalls. Calling all soil supporters, creature campaigners, dirt defenders!

Join us for a joyful, playful celebration of The Smalls, as we wriggle together through the untold story of their ecosystem.

Plastic Drastic Fantastic by Akademi | Children & Their Grown Ups Festival

Plastic. Is it friend or foe? Remarkable or rubbish? Helpful or harmful? Plastic Drastic Fantastic is a dance show for families exploring our complex relationship – from the molecular to the planetary – with all things plastic.

Plastic Drastic Fantastic draws from the Indian classical dance forms, Bharatanatyam and Kathak, to explore plastics and the dangers of their misuse through intricate movement, gestures and playful audience interaction.

Badnam Basti

Prem Kapoor’s film skilfully navigates the turbulent conditions under which it was made, subtly incorporating bisexuality in such a way that it bypassed India’s strict cultural censorship.

It's the story of the interlocking relationship between truck driver and ex-bandit Sarnam (Nitin Sethi), Bansari (Nandiat Thakur), a beautiful woman Sarnam saved from being raped, and Shivraj (Amar Kakkad), who works in a temple and is later hired by Sarnam.
