Is Leeds the most playful city in the galaxy?

Perhaps not yet, but a community of playful spirits is organising the first city-wide DIY Festival of Play and Creativity for this Autumn Half-Term. Leeds is already known for its playful pioneers, and this year, we're planning a feast of fun to brighten the winter months. Our organising crew includes library workers, community members, council workers, artists, and residents — all dedicated to making play a priority. We've hosted three community meet-ups — drawing over 100 local participants from various backgrounds — including individuals and business owners.

The Commandant's Shadow

From Warner Bros. Pictures and HBO Documentary Films comes filmmaker Daniela Völker’s timely and poignant documentary “The Commandant’s Shadow,” which follows Hans Jürgen Höss, the 87-year-old son of Rudolf Höss, as he faces his father’s terrible legacy for the first time. His father was the Camp Commandant of Auschwitz and masterminded the murder of over a million Jews; the life of Höss and his family was recently fictionalized in the Academy Award-winning “The Zone of Interest.” Now, “The Commandant’s Shadow” tells the story of the real people who lived on site at Höss’s death camp.

Scalarama Programme Launch: Popeye

The legendary, beloved anvil-armed sailor of the seven seas, Popeye, comes magically (and maniacally) to life, played by Robin Williams in his first studio film. Popeye meets all challenges with the unshakable philosophy, 'i yam what I yam and that's all that I yam' with consistent charm and melancholy from Williams. Shelley Duvall is Popeye's devoted long-limbed sweetie, Olive Oil, a role she was born to play, and joins Popeye in his adventures in the harbour town of Sweethaven, alongside a whimsical and clownified cast.

Easy A

Embracing the lie, Olive goes from unknown to infamous - exchanging her reputation for gift cards, creating a web of lies and sewing scarlet A's into all of her clothing. Complete with a puritanical high school nemesis, Amanda Bynes, boy next door, The Woodchuck (YES, that is You and Gossip Girls' Penn Badgeley).

Not only should Emma Stone have won her Oscar for her hilarious performance, Easy A also features scene stealing performances from her quippy onscreen parents, Dill, Stanley Tucci and Rosemary, Patricia Clarkson.
