Stitch Up Summer School: Upcycling Workshops

Join our brilliant artists Alice & Elnaz in the Stitch-Up Studio every Thursday afternoon for a summer of upcycling!

Think tie-dye, exciting embellishments, printing, sewing patches, cutting fringes and tassels and turning old clothes and items into new creations etc! Pick up some new skills such as sewing on a machine, crochet and punch needle. We would love to hear your ideas for upcycling too and let's make it happen!

Please note this session is for young people aged 13 - 19. The morning session is a seperate booking for young people aged 7-12.

Meet the Hatter

Curiouser and curiouser… 

In celebration of their 15th anniversary, Joss Arnott Dance returns with the company’s most ambitious production to date, their brand-new, cinematic dance and multimedia show Meet the Hatter.

Integrating dance, storytelling, original music, digital projection, lighting and animation, this epic production features a new retelling of the iconic Hatter character from Lewis Caroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland – but with a twist.

Heritage Open Day: Burmantofts Pottery

Join historian Lesley Newnham as she discusses  Burmantofts Pottery, the Leeds Victorian ceramics company which rivalled Doulton and Minton.

Burmantofts Pottery employed some of the leading sculptural and architectural names of the age and invented many new techniques and remains collectable today.

The talk will be accompanied by archives from Burmantofts along side ceramics form the collection held at the Discovery Centre. 

 

 

 

Summer Store Tours

Join us this Summer as we explore our amazing collections and enjoy a behind-the-scenes tours.

From toucans and telephones, to meteorites and masks, there is something for everyone to enjoy.

Leeds Discovery Centre offers a unique opportunity for hands-on exploration into the natural world, human history and ingenuity. Come and explore behind the scenes of our museum and discover the Leeds collections up close and personal.

These tours are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout the summer holidays.

Once Upon A Time... Family Workshop

Explore our collection of childrens stories books, and have a go at making your own!

In this stories based session, we'll be taking a look at children's story books in the collection.

After a tour of the store, we'll be designing our own book cover and creating your own story.

Our Social History collection has over 100,000 objects, and our recent emphasis on collecting has been for items that have strong local links to Leeds history and manufacture or association with Leeds people.

What stories will you discover?

Taxidermied! Family Workshop

Join our Natural Science curator as we look at how animals are taxidermied and preserved, get up close to our animal collections.

Learn about taxidermy alongside a professional taxidermist, including an ethical demonstration and a chance to see how it’s done!

You’ll also get the chance to make your own shoebox scene, complete with artificial animals!

All of this, is alongside a tour of our amazing store, containing over 1 million objects.

Ancient Egypt: Bread and Buried Workshop

Unearth the secrets of the Ancient Egypt this summer holiday at Leeds Discovery Centre.

There are always surprising secrets and curiosities to uncover our museum collection store. Recently, museum curators were surprised to find a slide from a Victorian microscopist who had collected and preserved an Egyptian breadcrumb, believed to be up to 3,000 years old!

But what can it tell us about the past?

From tiny breadcrumbs to coffin fragments, join us for family craft activities inspired by this ancient civilization and explore Egyptian treasures in our store.
