Sarah Jacobson's punk-spirited DIY films combine B-movie aesthetics and riot grrrl feminism, standing as a testament to the vision, determination, and raw talent of a director we lost too soon.
Follow a 19 year-old woman reacting to catcalls, condescension and terrible sex in the only way she knows how: murder in her acclaimed short I Was A Teenage Serial Killer.
Then dive into Jacobson’s only feature film Mary Jane’s Not A Virgin Anymore, the perfect anti rom-com set where? An independent cinema! When Jane’s experience losing her virginity isn’t quite how she imagined, she asks her cinema colleagues about their first times in this lo-fi, sex positive comedy shot on Super 8 color reversal film.
Preserved by the American Genre Film Archive in 2K from the only 16mm film elements in existence, this is a rare opportunity to see an unsung maverick of indie cinema’s films on the big screen.
Join us before the screening for a drop in zine workshop run by Leeds artist Rosie McAndrew, paying ode to the zines that inspired Jacobson's aesthetic. We will be accepting donations on the night for the Eve Appeal, the leading UK national charity funding research and raising awareness into the five gynaecological cancers.
