The House with Chicken Legs author Sophie Anderson on the magical stage adaptation at Leeds Playhouse this month.
For a long time the bestselling children’s author didn’t think she would find an audience for her work, “I’d been writing for ten years, mainly for my own children, and purely for the love of it,” she says.
So when her YA novel The House with Chicken Legs was accepted for publication, and quickly became a hit, it came as something of a surprise.

The brand-new musical is written by Emmy and Golden Globe-winning and Tony and Olivier Award-nominated David West Read (Schitt’s Creek, &Juliet) featuring the iconic music of Roy Orbison and directed by multi-award winning Luke Sheppard (&Juliet, What’s New Pussycat?).
This May and June a major new production of the late Kay Mellor’s A Passionate Woman will be staged in her memory at Leeds Playhouse – the theatre which first staged her breakthrough play 30 years ago.

LEEDS 2023 has partnered with National Youth Theatre, Leeds Playhouse and Compass Collective to provide a free ten-day acting course for young people across Leeds and West Yorkshire. Everyone who has completed the course will get to take part in a large-scale immersive outdoors performance about climate change later in September, as a part of a LEEDS 2023 signature event.

Set in Britain, ‘The Dash’ follows Edith, an obituarist who receives a mysterious unsigned and unpublished painting that holds a remarkable resemblance to her younger self.
As we approach International Women’s Day I recall this phrase “Create whatever causes a revolution in your heart!” (Writer Elizabeth Gill). After witnessing an exhibit which did just that, I felt compelled as an artist to explore further.
