A Character Reveals the Spirit – exhibition

A Character Reveals the Spirit is an exhibition curated by Yuanzi Chai, an MA Art Gallery and Museum Studies student from the University of Leeds.

Yuanzi Chai's own art practice as a calligrapher features in this exhibition about meaning of text, interpretation and translation.

The exhibition is designed to deepen people's understanding of artworks and evoke a greater appreciation for their subtle, hidden details.

You will find the exhibition in Red Studio (first floor).

"Test, Test, Test" – exhibition

Exhibition of work by Tianyou Huang, practice-based postgraduate researcher at the University of Leeds.

Tianyou Huang is a Practice-led PhD candidate in the School of Fine Art, History of Art and Cultural Studies at the University of Leeds. He completed his BA in Sculpture at Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, China, and MA in Sculpture at Royal College of Art, London. In 2018, he was awarded the Yorkshire Sculpture Park Graduate Award.

Nightmares and Daymoths - Hannah Guy

Hannah Guy's first solo show: Nightmares and Daymoths 

The debut solo show of work BA Fine Art graduate Hannah Guy was created from a staged photography project funded by a Berkofsky Award from the University of Leeds. This body of work retrospectively examines relationships to the pandemic, four years on. Through a collaborative series of three staged photographs, Hannah conveys her own experiences alongside those of two friends.

Private Apartment Tours

The Private Apartments on the first floor of Harewood House have hosted artists, presidents, kings and queens for over 250 years, and have been used by the Lascelles family since the 18th century. You will be guided around rooms that are still in use by the 8th Earl and Countess, filled with objects and artwork that reflect their family’s diverse interests and tastes.

The Sculpture Gallery Guest Artist: Mark Gibbs

Our new Guest Artist for the month – Mark Gibbs – is an exciting sculptor, drawing inspiration from the shapes, patterns and behaviours in the natural world. 

The variety of materials he employs is astounding, ranging from recycled wire and paper to kitchen foil, ceramics, old batteries, ash, banknotes, cowry shells, and fossil shark teeth. Mark's art expresses his interest in nature and the environment, in addition to his exploration of military conflict.

From Cocoon to Loom: Picturing the Chinese Silk Trade

Explore the ingenious process of silk production, weaving and trade through historic paintings, textiles, books – and discover where the magic begins, in the silkworm’s cocoon itself.

At its heart of this small temporary display, a suite of 19th-century watercolours from the Clemens N. Nathan Collection depicts the traditional process of making silk in China, from rearing silkworms to fabricating the final garments.
