The Sensation Novel, a popular form from the 1860s and 1870s, is a challenge to our assumptions about the Victorians. Far from being narratives about propriety and happy marriages, sensational plots are filled with crime, adultery, bigamy and misbehaviour. Join us for discussions of the key sensational novels of the 1860s-70s. You may not have heard of all the novelists, but there is a world of Victorian naughtiness to explore.

Whether you’re a poet or novelist, short-story writer, musician, stand-up comedian, or want to share a favourite piece of writing, the stage in our brand new event space awaits.

Sig-up for spots is on the night on a first-come, first-served basis, and strictly for a maximum of five minutes. Any accompaniment must be acoustic only. A paid bar will be available, as will a table for performers to sell books/CDs/merch directly to the audience. 

Beyond The Final Whistle | Book Talk & Performance, Radical Reading Room Event

Join us in welcoming Vasilis kostakis, author of Beyond The Final Whistle on Friday 30th May at 3pm for a special book talk and performance. Vasilis is only in Leeds for a couple of days so we’re delighted he’s found time to stop off at Left Bank whilst he’s here and tell us more about his book. Not only will you be able to hear about the book and learn more from the author but you may also be in for a mid afternoon musical treat.

The inspiring Lindsey Burrow will be joining us to talk about her memoir, Take Care: A Memoir of Love, Family & Never Giving Up. 

Lindsey will be in conversation with Claire Turner, CEO of Carers Leeds. The book is a life-affirming memoir of Lindsey Burrow, the working mother of three young children who inspired the nation through her selfless commitment to husband Rob Burrow (CBE), the rugby league legend she cared for following his motor neurone disease (MND) diagnosis.
