World Book Day: Story and Song

A singing storytelling session for World Book Day with freelance community music worker Nicky Bray in our beautiful museum, to tie in with this year's 'Story Time' exhibition.

Join us for an hour of light hearted literary and lyrical fun. All ages welcome. Especially suited to pre-schoolers!

This event is free, and drop-in, but voluntary donations are welcome on the day.

Mingus Dynasty Septet at the Howard Assembly Room

Formed by Sue Mingus after Mingus’ death in 1979, Mingus Dynasty Septet performs exclusively the music of composer/bassist Charles Mingus.

Charles Mingus was an iconic, trail-blazing bassist who said he was in fact first and foremost a composer, leaving behind over 300 compositions.

The Mingus Dynasty Septet aims to keep Charles' work alive and bring it to a new audience, and has become a New York institution for locals and tourists alike, with its weekly residency in its fourth decade.

Park Jiha at the Howard Assembly Room

Seamlessly combining the instrumentation and complex expression of traditional textures with contemporary forms and sounds, Park Jiha has developed a sound that's all her own which includes classical minimalism and improvised music using traditional Korean instruments like the Piri (a double-reed flute), Saenghwang (bamboo mouth organ), and Yanggeum (a hammered dulcimer).

Dave Bainbridge & Sally Minnear

Award winning multi-instrumentalist Dave Bainbridge joins forces with Lord of The Dance vocalist, instrumentalist Sally Minnear to bring a spellbinding evening of music that will, in equal measure have you jigging in (or out of!) your seat or bring a tear to your eye.

A compelling mix of powerful and ethereal vocal songs (including the occasional emotive Gaelic ballad). instrumental tracks (jigs / reels / slow airs / evolving soundscapes and virtuoso improvisation on keyboards, electric guitar, bouzouki and cowbell!

The Bootleg Shadows

‘The Bootleg Shadows’ perform a unique concert that encompasses the Shadows amazing career from 1960 up until the early 80s. Concert audiences are invited to relive fantastic hits such asApache, Foot Tapper, Riders in The Sky , Atlantis, Wonderful Land, Kon Tiki, Cavatina, FBI plus some hit songs of “Cliff” and a few “wild cards” for good measure!
