A Short History of Trans Misogyny book club

'𝐼𝑛 π‘‘π‘Ÿπ‘’π‘‘β„Ž,' Jules Gill-Peterson writes, 'π‘’π‘£π‘’π‘Ÿπ‘¦π‘œπ‘›π‘’ 𝑖𝑠 π‘–π‘šπ‘π‘™π‘–π‘π‘Žπ‘‘π‘’π‘‘ 𝑖𝑛 π‘Žπ‘›π‘‘ π‘ β„Žπ‘Žπ‘π‘’π‘‘ 𝑏𝑦 π‘‘π‘Ÿπ‘Žπ‘›π‘  π‘šπ‘–π‘ π‘œπ‘”π‘¦π‘›π‘¦.'

As Trans Awareness Week brings its usual round of flags and corporate platitudes, let's plot a route to true trans liberation by reading and talking about this slim, powerful queer history book, which exposes the historical origins of the transmisogynistic system in which we all live.

Come along even if you haven't read the whole thing, and we'll learn from each other: understanding how we got our current transphobic worldview is the first step towards burning it down.

Queer Open Mic with Out + Loud

Out + Loud are back at the Bookish Type for another queer open mic!

Melanie Whitehead Smith: HERE MARKS THE SPOT

Made in collaboration with LGBTQ+ people in Leeds, HERE MARKS THE SPOT maps sites of queer joy across the city.

Projections of dancing figures pop up across Leeds, translating personal moments into public celebrations.

The short dance films were made in collaboration with dance artist Melanie Whitehead Smith and local people who shared their experiences of queer joy.

Mixing physical theatre, contemporary dance and improvisation, the films create traces of happy memories, played out again in the locations that inspired them.

Queer Women and Queer Monsters Workshop

Join historian Cat Stiles for a talk and collage workshop celebrating the queer history of monstrous women and female monsters. We'll meet the OG lesbian vampire, sixteenth-century witches who had sex with the devil, and Medusa before and after her transformation into a monster.

Cat will take us on a guided tour of the history of gender and monstrous bodies, before giving you the chance to make your own monstrous collage art and poetry from historical pictures and texts - a perfect start to the spooky season!
