Your experienced tutor will guide you through the steps needed to centre, cone, open, and lift clay on a potter's wheel. They will help you overcome common frustrations of wheel work, and focus on enjoying this uniquely tactile process in a supportive environment. 

Content:

Wheel control, posture, centering, coning, opening up, collaring in, lifting a wall, compressing walls and rims, using a rib, wiring-off, wipe down.

Threads Textile Festival Market

Sunny Bank Mills' annual Threads Textile Festival is back for its third year celebrating textiles through a large Market, workshops to learn new skills or revive old ones, and a series of exciting speaker talks.

The Market located in the 1912 Mill will have 50+ textile stalls each day where you can browse and buy quality fabric and haberdashery supplies, wool and yarn, textile kits, clothing, homewares and more. The Market is open 10am – 4pm| £4 on the door (under 12s free).

Finding Craft in the Archive: Crochet and Crokus Bag Stories

In the Caribbean, the name crokus bag is used to refer to burlap sacks, also known as hessian or gunny sacks. They are made from woven natural fibres like jute and are traditionally used for transporting and storing goods.

During this fascinating talk, Rose will give an overview of her research and a general introduction to her work, as well as discussing aspects of her study of craft crochet and crokus bags. Rose will explore the history of crokus bags, their many uses, and their significance within Caribbean culture.

Sew a Naturally Dyed Toadstool - Threads 2025

Join textile artist and owner of ocre natural dye studio, Kayleigh Davis for a workshop where you will hand stitch your own toadstool.

Kayleigh will bring a selection of naturally dyed silk fabrics for you to choose from and will guide you through the step by step process of stitching and constructing your own unique toadstool using her classic design.

This workshop involves some intricate work so is best suited for those who are confident hand stitchers.

This workshop is suitable for those age 16+.

Fantasy Fibre Flowers - Threads 2025

Create your own version of tropical flowers, fantasy flora or magical forests inspired by Jane’s sculptures of an imaginary garden, as seen in her artwork Garden Conversation. Look at the colours, textures and forms in photos of flowers and jungles or use your own imagination.

Learn how to wrap threads, fabrics and wires together to create abstract three-dimensional soft sculptures.

This is suitable for all skill levels. No sewing is required. You will be using wire cutters and scissors. Age 16+
