Matt Anderson – Tenor Saxophone

Jamil Sheriff – Piano

Sam Quintana – Double-Bass

Dave Hamblett – Drums

Old friends and frequent musical collaborators from Leeds and London come together for a rare outing exploring jazz songbook standards, tunes by the likes of Wayne Shorter and Thelonious Monk and their own compositions. Expect a wide-open approach with unexpected twists and turns, all rooted in warm-toned melodicism.

Born in the North Yorkshire Moors, the son of a music teacher based in Leeds for a time, Matt Anderson has lived in London since 2015. He released his fourth album, Live at Leeds Jazz Festival, last year with his long-running quartet, with Jazzwise awarding it four stars and writing, “a soulful depth to his musicality that underpins the academic attention to detail… rooted in the language of swinging post-bop but with a distinctive British accent”. As well as working with a host of top musicians in London and Leeds, he has led his own band at venues like Bimhuis, Amsterdam and Jamboree, Barcelona, as well as touring in New Zealand, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe. He was awarded the Dankworth Prize for Composition and is an Associate of the Royal Academy of Music, London.

Jamil Sheriff has recorded and collaborated with many artists and recorded many albums of his own music, each of which have received national and international accolades. He has been described by The Times as an “excellent Northern pianist who brings together a range of contemporary and urban approaches”, and is also currently the Head of School of Music and Education at Leeds Conservatoire after nine years of running their jazz course.

Sam Quintana can be heard underpinning many diverse creative projects which perform frequently around the UK and internationally, appearing with the likes of Jasmine Myra and Emma Rawicz, and he also leads his own group Wandering Monster. This band have released three critically-acclaimed albums through the London-based Ubuntu label.

Dave Hamblett records and tours with many artists in a variety of genres, with current projects including The Magic Lantern, Snowpoet and Wanderland, and he has also performed with jazz artists like Julian Arguelles and Kenny Wheeler. His own album ‘Light at Night’ was released to critical acclaim on the Whirlwind label in 2013.
