Menelik Shabazz shines a light on the music genre often dubbed ‘romantic reggae’; a uniquely Black British sound that developed in the late '70s and '80s against a backdrop of riots, racial tension and sound systems.
Shining a light on an often forgotten period in British music, social and political history, Shabazz’s debut documentary feature tells the story of an important genre of British reggae that still lives on today. Centred predominantly around female voices, Lovers Rock was the first ‘girl power’ music in the UK at a time of heightened political tension and racial unrest.
The Story of Lovers Rock will be introduced by Leeds-based DJ Fluid Irie.
