This true crime drama was Bob Fosse’s final film, it was a stark departure from the musicals he is better known for. Eric Roberts in a career defining role stars as Paul Snider perhaps the sleaziest person to ever inhabit the silver screen. Mariel Hemingway stars as Dorothy Stratten, playboy bunny turned actress. Cliff Robertson stars as Hugh Hefner.
Bob Fosse said he focused on Snider because of all the characters he the one he “identified” with the most. Unfairly maligned by many on its initial release and Stratten’s boyfriend the filmmaker Peter Bogdanovich was so disgusted by the film he wrote a book condemning it. It has grown in stature over the years and is now seen as a key film in Fosse’s work and an insightful into male violence in the media and toxic masculinity.
This screening is part of the Scalarama Leeds 2025 Film Festival, a DIY celebration of pop-up cinema and independent film exhibition.
