‘Marching On Together’ is a momentous anthem for Leeds United fans. It was originally written under the title ‘Leeds! Leeds! Leeds!’ by Les Reed and Barry Mason, who also wrote ‘The Last Waltz’ for Engelbert Humperdinck and ‘Delilah’ for Tom Jones (incidentally an unofficial anthem for Stoke City).

It first became a hit on the terraces when it was sung by the 1972 Leeds United team and supporters on the B-side of ‘Leeds United’, a single released to coincide with the team reaching the FA Cup Final.

The special version you can hear in Leeds Playhouse's production of Through It All Together was recorded by members of the Corner Flag Café who meet-up at Elland Road supported by Leeds City Council’s Peer Support Service for people living with dementia in partnership with the Leeds United Foundation. Corner Flag Cafe offers a safe, welcoming space for older fans and people living with dementia to connect through football memories.

On the day of the recording, two very special guests joined the throng for the sing-along – Leeds United legends Jermaine Beckford, who made 126 appearances for the club in 2006-2010, and Paul Reaney who play first team for Leeds United between 1962 – 1978 making a whopping 745 first team-appearances.

“It’s always a privilege to come back and be part of something that brings people together,” said Jermaine Beckford. “Hearing everyone sing Marching On Together - it gave me goosebumps.”

Paul Reaney added: “This club is about more than football. It’s about family, community, and history. Today was a reminder of that.”

John and Jenny Burkitt, who participate in the Peer Support Service and are regulars at the Corner Flag Cafe, said: "Just to say how much we enjoyed the session at Leeds United and to say thank you to Peer Support. A massive thank you as well to the staff of Leeds Playhouse and Leeds United who were great fun!”

Through It All Together was commissioned and developed by Leeds Playhouse with support from members of Leeds’ Dementia Engagement and Empowerment Project (DEEP), which is co-run by Leeds Playhouse and Dementia Friendly Leeds.

Leeds Playhouse is grateful everyone involved in the recording, and we hope you’ll sing along!
