FILMusic: The Cabinet of Dr Caligari

Join Leeds’ City Organist, and HAR-favourite Darius Battiwalla, for a Halloween double-bill of silent film classics, underscored by his signature spooky organ stylings.

Masterpiece of German expressionist silent film, The Cabinet of Dr Caligari (1919) follows the mysterious Dr Caligari who enthrals and terrifies villagers with his fairground sideshow, a sleeping man in a box who wakes only to answer people’s questions. When murders and terror seep through the town, all is not as it seems…

HAR Late: Slumber Party

Dear diary…. I’ve been invited to the ultimate 90s sleepover-themed pyjama party!

We’ll start the evening with a movie (of course), so curl up with a cocktail for a screening of the unparalleled Shakespearean-teen-rom-com-classic, 10 Things I Hate About You.

After the film, twin choreographers Melissa and Martina Gumbs will teach us all a dance in iconic sleepover style. No experience needed. In fact, experience discouraged.

The Matrix

Lana and Lilly Wachowski's seminal sci-fi epic returns to cinemas this Summer to mark it's 25th anniversary. The film follows computer programmer Thomas Anderson as he falls down the rabbit hole and learns the true nature of reality on the way.

25 years after first wowing audiences with its clever premise and phenomenal use of martial arts, The Matrix still has the ability to astonish and inspire today – with its forewarnings over AI and diminishing freewill, feeling more prescient and relevant than ever.

The main suspect, Emmett Myers (played by William Talman), is trying to escape a police manhunt and at gunpoint forces two friends on a fishing trip to take him to where he can get a ferry to Mexico…

This is Africa as we love to see it.

Red Herring

When Kit Vincent, a young filmmaker, receives a terminal diagnosis aged 24, his first instinct is to turn on his camera and document those closest to him.

Kit’s divorced parents are naturally having a hard time grappling with the reality of their son’s illness, and his father, Lawrence, begins a transition of his own-a conversion to Judaism. Following along with his father’s process of grieving for his son’s upended future, Red Herring captures the absurdity of the things we do to find solace in times of inexplicable tragedy.

blur: To The End

A new feature-length documentary depicting the extraordinary and emotional return of blur, captured during the year in which they made a surprise return with their first record in 8 years, the critically acclaimed #1 album ‘The Ballad of Darren’.
