Frankenstein

Del Toro's adaptation movingly captures the sense of isolation and yearning which permeate the story, whilst also creating a fugue of dread and elemental horror. The outcome is a contemporary gothic masterpiece that immediately feels timeless.

Oscar Isaac's egotistical and obsessive Victor Frankenstein is balanced perfectly by an outstanding performance by Mia Goth as Elizabeth and Jacob Elordi, who delivers a heart-stealing performance as the Creature.

Alien

Responding to an unknown emergency broadcast, the crew of the Nostromo investigate a desolate planet. But to their horror, and ours, they bring something else back on board with them. Something predatory, terrifying, brutal. But the creature is not the only danger that lurks in the darkness of their ship.

Showing as part of our Philosophy & Film strand, Alien has been selected by Dr. Jordan Adshead and will be followed by a short talk from Jordan, exploring some of the philosophical themes raised.

Happyend

Happyend is a vivid coming-of-age portrait, following best friends Yuta and Kou as they confront a world where AI surveillance is tightening under the yoke of oppressive authoritarianism. Infused with the raw energy and pulsing with a techno soundtrack, Happyend is a hopeful, youthful vision of resistance and joy in the face of control.

The Smashing Machine

Portrayed with vulnerability and conviction by Dwayne Johnson, mixed martial arts and UFC champion Mark Kerr, alongside his devoted partner Dawn (Emily Blunt), faces a defeat he's never been prepared for, as he battles his own demons and addiction.

The true story of this huge 90s sports personality subverts familiar conventions of the genre, with its realistic grit, documentary feel and honest directness, which is what you'd expect from Benny Safdie, here directing solo for the first time following his acclaimed work on Good Time and Uncut Gems alongside his brother.

The Mastermind

The Framingham Museum of Art, Massachusetts, is the site of a pleasant visit by the Mooney family. While wife Terri (Haim, Licorice Pizza) and the kids look at the works, J.B. (O’Connor, God’s Own Country, SFF 2017; Challengers) cases the joint. Finding some significant lapses in the diligence of the museum security, J.B. starts scheming. Identifying the works to nab is a simple matter, but this seemingly middle-class suburban dad has much greater difficulty in assembling a team to pull off the robbery.

A House of Dynamite

In this tale of a possible new Cold War, when a single unattributed missile is launched at the United States, a desperate race begins to determine who it was and how to respond. But who do you fire back at if you don't know who is responsible for the attack? And with nuclear threats, time to make decisions disappears fast.

Princess Mononoke

Inflicted with a deadly curse, the young warrior Ashitaka heads west in search of a cure. There, he stumbles into a bitter conflict between Lady Eboshi, the proud people of Iron Town, and the enigmatic Princess Mononoke, a young girl raised by wolves, who will stop at nothing to prevent the humans from destroying her home and the forest spirits and animal gods who live there.

Years later, two kids, Judy and Peter, find the game and accidentally release Alan - now grown up! But the adventure is just beginning. As they play, wild animals, jungle dangers, and magical chaos come to life in their town. To stop the madness, they must finish the game... but Jumanji doesn’t make it easy!
