A Short History of Trans Misogyny book club

'𝐼𝑛 𝑡𝑟𝑢𝑡ℎ,' Jules Gill-Peterson writes, '𝑒𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑦𝑜𝑛𝑒 𝑖𝑠 𝑖𝑚𝑝𝑙𝑖𝑐𝑎𝑡𝑒𝑑 𝑖𝑛 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑠ℎ𝑎𝑝𝑒𝑑 𝑏𝑦 𝑡𝑟𝑎𝑛𝑠 𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑜𝑔𝑦𝑛𝑦.'

As Trans Awareness Week brings its usual round of flags and corporate platitudes, let's plot a route to true trans liberation by reading and talking about this slim, powerful queer history book, which exposes the historical origins of the transmisogynistic system in which we all live.

Come along even if you haven't read the whole thing, and we'll learn from each other: understanding how we got our current transphobic worldview is the first step towards burning it down.

Can you create collage poems for the National Poetry Centre?

The National Poetry Centre is asking people to send in collage poems made from words taken from magazines and newspapers.

The poems must be created from recyclable materials and follows the NPC’s successful Rubbish Words event, which saw hundreds of people inspired to make poems using words cut out of items such as posters and theatre play bills.

Rubbish Words took place on 18-20 October at Leeds Corn Exchange.

Introduction to Memoir Writing with Chris Bartlett

Join professional writer and teacher Chris and explore the world of memoir writing - this session is perfect for an absolute beginner or for someone who already has a little writing experience.

A memoir is a narrative written from your perspective, which can be about an important aspect of your life. As well as being an empowering personal journey, writing a memoir can help you share priceless life experiences so that they can inspire others.

Rubbish Words

Drop in, collage and create poems from funky and fabulous recyclables, such as old posters and theatre programmes! A free event for all ages and spanning three days, brought to you by the National Poetry Centre, and made possible thanks to funding from Leeds City Council's Cultural Investment Programme Grow: Project strand and the University of Leeds.

Budding bairds don't need to attend every day - stay as long as you like.

Join us for Storytime! We will be reading Troll by Frances Stickley and Stefano Martinuz.

Troll is a deaf inclusive story and we will have Ann, a BSL interpreter to help us share the story with everybody.

Troll is a lovely story that can be enjoyed by anyone but is aimed at children aged 3-7.

All children must be accompanied by a responsible care giver.

For this event we will be taking to dry land and hosting in West Dock Creative Studios, the building next to our floating bookshop. It is fully accessible.

Tarot for Writers Workshop

Do you know your Fool card from your Two of Wands? Or are you aware of tarot out there in the queerosphere and want to explore how you could use it in your writing?

This workshop, designed both for tarot novices and practised readers, will explore different strategies for adapting tarot to creative writing. Please bring something to write with and something to write on - no tarot cards or prior experience needed.
