Print Making at the Crown

During the workshop you will be using tools to draw into ink and remove areas of light to build up a picture. Niamh prefers to use a photo of places she’s been, or some sketches that she’s taken on location. So choosing a place or taking some photos on a walk could fuel your inspiration. You’ll then take a print of the drawing by pressing down some paper over it, which you’ll be able to take home with you!

Jigsaw Linocut

Printing a linocut jigsaw style is an easy way to print a design in multiple colours. You cut the lino block into pieces, ink them up separately, then put the lino block back together to print.

Your tutor will guide you through designing an image for the jigsaw printing method. You will also be shown how to carve the lino block, apply the inks, and print it – both with our traditional Albion relief printing press, and burnishing by hand. You will be shown examples of lino prints made using this method, and advice on the kind of designs that work best.

Introduction to Screen Printing - 5 Week Course

This 5 week evening course will run on Tuesdays 24th September – 22nd October 6pm-8.30pm.

You will gain an understanding of the photo stencil emulsion technique and will learn how to coat and expose screens using our UV exposure unit. Your tutor will also introduce you to relevant contextual artists and screen printing terminology.

Drypoint Taster Session

Drypoint etching is a printing process where lines or marks are scratched or inscribed into a surface which is then printed from. It is usually by the intaglio method, where the incisions are filled with ink and printed from, rather than the relief method which prints from the surface.

Lino Printing

Learn and explore the basics of linocut on this one day workshop.

Lino is a relief printing process. The printing plate can be made from traditional hessian backed flooring lino or a polymer based block. We will use an easy cut lino which is softer and easier to use. You will be shown how to safely cut and carve an image or pattern into the lino using specialist cutting tools. You will be shown how to ink up and print the lino using our traditional Albion press and also some simple but effective methods that can be continued at home without a press.
