Opera North: The Flying Dutchman

Step into the storm

Legend has it The Flying Dutchman is doomed to sail the ocean for all eternity. Only true and committed love can bring freedom. Once every seven years, the ship’s captain may set foot on land in search of it. Consumed by the sad tale, Senta is determined to be the woman to save the Dutchman. Will their chance meeting finally bring salvation, or tragedy?

Discover the legend for yourself in this new production by Annabel Arden, designed by Joanna Parker, with some of Wagner’s most bracing music to propel you through the storm.

Opera North: Love Life

In 1948 – the year of Love Life’s Broadway premiere – husband and wife Sam and Susan Cooper try to recall a time when their marriage was happy.

They reckon it was in 1790… The show then follows the ups and downs of the Coopers’ family life through 150 turbulent years of American history – during which they do not age – to paint the portrait of a marriage and of a nation.

Opera North: Ruddigore

Step into the mayhem

Bad baronet Sir Despard Murgatroyd has inherited a centuries-old curse – he must commit a crime a day or die in agony. That is, until the timid Robin Oakapple is revealed as his long-lost brother and the true inheritor of the curse. Blossoming romance will be dashed, and a chorus of ghosts will reappear when Robin’s feeble crimes don’t cut it with his ancestors. In this topsy-turvy world, is there a way to break the curse?

Opera North: A Midsummer Night's Dream

Step into the magic

An operatic adaptation of Shakespeare’s comedy, A Midsummer Night’s Dream traces a tangled web of relationships hurtling towards catastrophe. In the woods, meet the feuding Fairy King and Queen, and in Athens, meet a confused quadrangle of lovers. As these characters’ stories intertwine, one thing is inevitable… magic, mischief and mayhem are sure to follow.

Opera North: The Magic Flute

Step into the adventure

In one of the greatest operas ever written, the dashing prince Tamino is on a quest to find love and happiness.
