Chemistry 16: Ian Duhig, Angela Topping and S for Sulphur

Chemistry is back, with another night of poetry and spoken word, two brilliant headliners and our amazing open mic. This time round our headliners are Leeds legend Ian Duhig and Cheshire poet Angela Topping.

The events are themed on the elements of the periodic table, so this time it’s element number 16, which is S for Sulphur. The theme is entirely optional, but we hope you might use it as a creative prompt to come up with some new work to reveal on the night.

Christmas Tales with Julie Hesmondhalgh

BAFTA-nominated (Broadchurch) actor and narrator Julie Hesmondhalgh (Coronation Street, Mr Bates vs The Post Office) joins us for two nights of seasonal stories and glorious festive music performed by an ensemble from the Orchestra of Opera North.

The stage is set on a chilly Christmas Eve, as our Storyteller weaves traditional tales through musical arrangements including ‘Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies’ and ‘Good King Wenceslas’ – made especially for a group of ten musicians, by composer Andy Stamatakis-Brown.

Queer Open Mic with Out + Loud

Out + Loud are back at the Bookish Type for another queer open mic!

As the winter evenings draw in, we’re thinking about what keeps us hopeful and connected. Come along and share something; personal, political, rage or joy, new words or old favourites to chase away wintery disillusionment.

To sign up to perform simply send us a message or email, there will also be a few spaces to sign up on the night if inspiration strikes. So whether you’re a poet, comedian, musician, or something else entirely, we’d love to have you perform with us!

Can you create collage poems for the National Poetry Centre?

The National Poetry Centre is asking people to send in collage poems made from words taken from magazines and newspapers.

The poems must be created from recyclable materials and follows the NPC’s successful Rubbish Words event, which saw hundreds of people inspired to make poems using words cut out of items such as posters and theatre play bills.

Rubbish Words took place on 18-20 October at Leeds Corn Exchange.
