YVONNE LYON/BOO HEWERDINE BIO

Yvonne Lyon and Boo Hewerdine’s new collaboration Things Found In Books is an album of songs written in response to a notice board in Culzean Castle’s second- hand bookshop. Notes, photographs, old receipts, letters, postcards and fragments of people's lives had been collected from the old books and kept on the board on the wall among the bookshelves.

Yvonne and Boo formed an inimitable songwriting partnership, weaving these ephemeral stories with their own, creating an album full of nostalgia and beauty, hope and longing.
Boo Hewerdine is an acclaimed Ivor Novello Award nominated English singer/ songwriter.

For over 30 years Boo has been considered one of the UK’s finest singer- songwriters. As lead singer of seminal band, The Bible through to his subsequent solo work and long-time collaboration with the incredible Eddi Reader Boo has become something of a national treasure. Eddi Reader enjoyed international success with the Hewerdine written hit single Patience of Angels in 1995 and Boo also produced Reader’s Sings the Songs of Robert Burns in 2003, an album now viewed as a folk classic. He is one of the greatest songwriter performers in the business.

The Brief for creating an album full of ephemeral stories:
The concept behind Things Found in Books is a blueprint for imagining and re- imaging stories from ‘nowhere’ to create a world rich with meaning and sometimes, just pure fantasy. Of course, nothing ever comes from nowhere.

To be able to take lost fragments of people’s lives and weave a new narrative into the song form is a powerful expression that can connect and reconnect people with memories of the past and help nourish hopes for the future. The capacity of songwriting and the song form to hold people’s emotions, to aid in understanding more about ourselves and to help us find perspective on life, is profound.

Drawing on work for Yvonne’s Masters in Songwriting and Performance from the UWS, she has found that a tiny visual stimulus is often all that is needed to spark an idea or evoke a resonance for someone. For those who struggle with words, it is an opportunity to create in a different way that could access an untapped well of imagination. Human beings are inveterate meaning makers. Telling a story through song gives it significance and contributes to reconnecting with ‘the self’. The mental health benefits are huge. Songwriting provides an opportunity for making creative decisions, catharsis and literally a rewiring of our neural pathways.

‘Songs weave tales of our sorrows, they reveal our innermost secrets, and they express our hopes and disappointments, our fears and triumphs. They are our musical diaries, our life-stories. They are the sounds of our personal development.’ Bruscia

Our journey through Things Found In Books offers just one way to imagine things differently.

We are excited to invite others into that process and see what worlds they find for themselves. As a qualified secondary school music teacher, Yvonne is familiar with delivering diverse education within an inclusive setting.
