In honour of the centenary of visionary director Wojciech Has, we are screening two of his most well known films THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT and THE HOURGLASS SANATORIUM at The Northern Market in Leeds this April. Join us to celebrate the life and work of a groundbreaking surrealist whose works have inspired a diverse range of creative artists from Martin Scorsese to Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead.

1st April

THE SARAGOSSA MANUSCRIPT

Adapted from the enigmatic novel by eccentric Polish count Jan Potocki, this film chronicles a web of interlocking tales of eighteenth century Spain involving cabalists, sheikhs and secret societies. Together they describe a vast conspiracy surrounding Captain Alphonse van Worden during his sixty-six day exile in the haunted Sierra Morena mountains.

2nd April

THE HOURGLASS SANATORIUM

A psychedelic phantasmagoria based on the short stories of Polish Jewish writer Bruno Schulz, this film tells the story of Józef's visit to his dying father in a dilapidated hospital where time behaves in peculiar ways. It is also Has's tribute to Schulz and Poland's pre-war Jewish community, the memory of whose vibrant and flourishing culture forms a central theme of the film.

Both films will be screened in high definition with the original Polish audio and English subtitles.

A 20% discount is applied if you book tickets to both screenings.
