In this workshop we’ll take an in depth look at the head and how the features of the face are constructed, from the measurement tips and tricks to look out for through to identification of the planes and the direction of shading, which will help give your features true form.

You’ll learn through a series of step-by-step instructions, with the opportunity to try out everything you’ve learnt by creating your own portrait at the end of the class.

Each artist is asked to bring along their own clean sketchbook so that when they leave they will have everything they need (a comprehensive guide plus examples) to be able to carry on their practice at home. There are also sketchbooks available to purchas within the Gallery Shop.

Artist bio:

Mairi Beaton is an artist and graphic designer, based at Sunny Bank Mills for the past 5 years. Her painting is about catching subjects at a fleeting moment in time. Whether they are immersed in an activity they enjoy or a more direct representation of their personality at a given point in their life; it’s these non-posed aspects which give meaning to both her work and for her sitters.
