Hyde Park Art Club and Redundant Span are delighted to invite you to the opening of 'The Wrangthorn Enquirer - News from Now and Here' at Hyde Park Book Club. This event willl take place between 8pm -10pm Tuesday 8th July 2025. The show will continue daily until 21st September.
This event will include a live element and will follow SITUATION Leeds’ conference. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate and reconsider Leeds’ history of art in and as a response to public space- than this community press residency that will be hosted by HPAC for the duration of the summer of '25.
At a time when newspapers are disappearing or are contaminated with the need to sell advertising space through clickbait articles, pop-up adverts for online services and a public lust for soundbytes - Hyde Park Art Club are delighted to present a durational Summer Season of free press and roaming ideas as antidote, delivered at Hyde Park Book Club by The Wrangthorn Enquirer.
These are some of the guiding principles of The Wrangthorn Enquirer, the radical community press that will infiltrate and document Hyde Park Book Club and its surroundings this summer.
The Wrangthorn Enquirer is the latest ‘idiotic’ venture by Redundant Span publishing.
It attempts to reflect the real lives and dreams of people in the area as an extended daily concrete poem, drawn from a range of different news sources.
Redundant Span is an artist-led Leeds-based publication imprint, which publishes zines, chapbooks, tracts, cordels and books that act as form of ‘asphalt literature’ – a type of writing that attempts to force previously quiet poetic verse into the ‘hard school of the city street’. The Wrangthorn Enquirer is a community newspaper for Hyde Park, LS6 [formerly known as ‘Wrangthorn’] that will expand out physically into the space around Hyde Park Book Club, whilst also squeezing in parallel into the pages of a tabloid-sized 4 page printed newspaper. Headlines will bleed out into LS6 through pasted interventions around Hyde Park.
The residency will involve a live ‘Front Page Headlines ‘installation produced daily by Redundant Span, combining photomontage, concrete poetry, RSS news feeds, and redacted diary entries. This live installation will evolve over the summer, layering feeds and imagery - demonstrating the flux, pace, inevitability and intertwining of news, its context and its readers and acknowledging the constant visual content that surrounds us in public space.
The installation will also feature a film featuring interviews with local residents, and a daily cartoon and in addition to the live news headlines at Book Club itself, the Enquirer will be produced as a 4 page free newspaper, and a 36 page zine which will escape the building in 100 copy pressings.
