This one-day course will introduce you to the basics of blacksmithing and hand forge work with Jacek Robótka of Jorgen Craft.
This is one day class concentrating on the particular techniques of forging a small kitchen knife. The blade shape will be based on Viking era knife find from Birka, grave Bj 903.
Starting with fire control and hand hammer work, you will learn carbon steel forging. We will forge the blade and then tang, we then work the edge down to a thin section and forge the blade bevel.
You will then heat treat your blades in three processes (normalising, hardening and tempering). You will then clean up the blades on a grinder so that they are ready for you fit to a pre made handle and then finally sharpen and strop to a razor’s edge.
No prior experience is needed and the class will guide you through:
Forge safety
Using a gas forge hammer and anvil
Forging the blade to shape
Forging the blade bevel
Forging the tang
Heat treating, normalising hardening and tempering
Burning on the handle
Blade finishing, sharpening, stropping and edge testing
The course is open to all aged 18+ who can swing a hammer... (or younger accompanied by a parent), please get in touch with any specific requirements.
At the end of the day you will go home with a fully finished and sharp knife that you have made yourself suitable for a lifetime of use in your kitchen.
This is a perfect introduction to the craft of the Bladesmith.
