LWR Young Makers: Introduction to Woodwork - Beginners Hand Tools Level 1

This one day course is for young makers to have a go at using the tools most common house handtools.

Course contents includes How to: Measure, use a drill, choose and identify wood, the principles of building and planning and more! For ages 10 + Accompanying adults are required to be with young people under 16 years old at all times. Full details can be found in our terms and conditions . (See below)

Duration

5 hours with a 30 minute lunch break. 10am - 3pm, and additional comfort breaks. Lunch is not provided so please bring lunch with you, there are places nearby to grab some lunch if needed.

What skill level should I be?

The course is designed to teach young people aged 10 -18 years old the fundamental skills, techniques & principals of woodworking. We welcome participants with no experience.

What they learn?

The course is a mixture of theory and practical learning. You will learn how to use a range of hand tools that can commonly be found in your home and learn to identify the most suitable woods for a project.

Participants will gain an understanding of all the basic terms & techniques required. You will create a small project to put into practice the skills you will learn.

What else is included

We aim to inspire Young People to learn and make mistakes. We hope to educate participants about woodwork, construction, recycling and the environment.

Who is the tutor?

We have a pool of experience makers from a range of backgrounds, such as furniture makers, luthiers, picture framers, eco builders and joiners.

What do I need to bring?

All tools are supplied. Lunch is not supplied so make sure you've got some with you. Please wear clothes suitable for dusty work and sensible shoes. We provide the hot drinks and biscuits for the break. Please bring warm clothing – we recommend you bring layers – it can be cold in our workshop even in summer.. It's also a good idea to bring a notepad and pencil so you can make notes!

Where can I park my car or bike?

There is free car parking opposite LWR (it’s free to use for LWR participants.) You're welcome to bring your bike in the warehouse to keep it safe.

Leeds Wood Recycling is a social enterprise and not-for-profit organisation, so it’s good to know that by enrolling on a course with us you are supporting your local community.

LWR gives people who are marginalised from the job training market free experience and training which can help them develop and make positive changes in their lives. We promise to continue diverting wood waste from landfill and continue to support marginalised individuals creating a supportive community.

All young people under 16 must remain with an ‘Accompanying adult’.

Young people who are between 16 - 17 years old may be left unsupervised, However, an emergency contact form must be completed with details of a ‘Responsible adult’, in case of emergency. The ‘Responsible adult’ must be contactable for the duration of time that that young person is onsite.

A “Participating adult” is a “Responsible adult” who stays with the young person, to support them whilst also, taking part in a course. They must stay with their young person at all times. They will have paid for a place on the course, in addition to the young maker. The “Participating adult” takes part in the course alongside their young person and follows the same learning and same product-making.

Ratios of Responsible Adults to Young people

1’ Responsible adult’ may support 2 young people in the same course
