St Peter's Singers is thrilled to announce a highly anticipated live performance of J.S. Bach's transcendent St John Passion on Good Friday, March 29th, at Leeds Minster. This momentous performance features Otley-raised Toby Ward, a distinguished tenor and esteemed choral conductor, returning to his roots as a principal soloist. Accompanying Ward is the renowned baritone Phil Wilcox, adding his exceptional talent to this rendition of Bach’s masterpiece, and creating an unforgettable musical experience for all in attendance.

Toby Ward's musical journey began as a boy chorister at Leeds Parish Church, now known as Leeds Minster. Since those formative years he has garnered international acclaim, earning a prestigious Tenor Choral Scholarship at King's College, Cambridge, and completing postgraduate studies at the Royal College of Music. Ward's expertise extends beyond performing; he is also the visionary founder and director of Ensemble Pro Victoria, a highly acclaimed early music group. Ward's return to Leeds Minster as the Evangelist in Bach's St John Passion promises an evening of extraordinary musicality and profound emotion.

Phil Wilcox, celebrated for his versatile musical talents, joins Ward in this performance in the role of Christus. Wilcox's extensive experience as a concert soloist, opera singer, and professional chorister adds depth and richness to his portrayal of this pivotal role. Together, Ward and Wilcox merge their wealth of talent and experience to breathe new life into Bach's timeless masterpiece.

Under the adept direction of Alexander Woodrow, St Peter's Singers will be accompanied by the National Festival Orchestra, delivering a captivating rendition of the St John Passion. The choir, comprised of exceptionally talented members, will skilfully switch roles between the impassioned mob and embodying the reflective Christian community, seamlessly weaving a narrative that transcends the constraints of time.

This performance commemorates 300 years since the St John Passion's premiere in Leipzig in 1724. Bach's composition, with its profound exploration of love, betrayal, and grief, continues to resonate with audiences today. St Peter's Singers invites you to experience the profound power and beauty of Bach's music first-hand.

Join St Peter's Singers and the National Festival Orchestra on March 29th at 7pm for an unforgettable evening of music and reflection.
