Join our 5 week Introduction to Letterpress Course running on Wednesdays 5th June – 3rd July 6:30 – 9:00pm.
Throughout this short course you’ll learn and explore the process of letterpress using both metal and wood type.
Your tutor will begin by demonstrating how to set type, what all of our letterpress equipment does, and how to print on our galley and Albion presses. Along the way you’ll learn about letterpress history and specialised vocabulary.
As the course progresses, students will have the opportunity to set and print their own type, beginning simply and working towards layered compositions in multiple colours.
What experience do I need?
This course is designed to be accessible for beginners in letterpress. Those with some previous experience may also benefit from exploring the letterpress equipment, developing ideas for new projects and gaining tutor advice and guidance.
What will I make?
You’ll produce at least 3 different editions, as well as some demonstration pieces. We’ll also work a print exchange into the sessions, so students will be able to take home a selection of other students’ work as part of a workshop portfolio.

Our aim is to bring printmaking to as many people as possible. By their nature, some printmaking processes involve an amount of physical effort. Leeds Print Workshop is based in a basement studio at Patrick Studios, a bespoke venue for artists operated by East Street Arts. It is wheelchair accessible, with a lift, larger than standard doors and accessible toilet facilities. We recognise that everybody’s accessibility needs may differ, therefore please email us at hello@leedsprintworkshop.org to discuss any concerns you may have before booking. There is one blue badge car parking space to the side of the building on Rider Street, subject to availability.
Please note: we regret that, for safety reasons, only those over the age of 16 will be permitted to undertake the course.
