The mysterious workings of the human brain are revealed through sculpture and light. Step into the University of Leeds' Pyramid Theatre at Leeds Light Night 2025 where science and art converge, and gaze up at the building blocks of the mind. In this collaboration between artist Sue Walpole and PhD researcher Morgan Thomas, vast neuron forms, delicately woven from willow, glow with reactive lights that spark and flow in constant dialogue. Each flicker traces the vital communications that sustain life, shaping every sensation, memory, and movement.

Immersive imagery and soundscapes surround visitors in the fragile beauty and organic origins of biological neural networks, while also confronting the moments when these connections falter or are hijacked by disease. The work invites reflection on both the magnificence and delicacy of the human mind, and on the profound mystery of how many of these intricate connections, woven together, create networks that transcend the mechanics of science to give rise to something as mysterious and fascinating as consciousness itself.
