Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas have established themselves as the leading Brazilian music band in the north of England in the 2 years since their formation in Leeds.
In 2024, they played sold out shows at Band On The Wall Manchester, Peggy's Skylight Nottingham and Brudenell Leeds, all Brazil Carnival 2024 parties. At the end of May, the band closed the Leeds Jazz Festival/Welcome To Leeds open air stage on the Saturday with the biggest crowd attendance ever for this stage since the festival launched.
They are back this autumn in Leeds for a "Brazilian Beats Leeds" session (hosted by DJ Lubi) at Headrow House with special guest Portuguese/UK vocalist Maya Blandy. Support comes from Manchester based Brazilian master piano accordionist and king of forró Zagotinho Do Acordeon and his trio.
Brazilian saxophonist Gustavo Andrade came to Leeds from Sao Paulo in 2019 to study jazz at Leeds Conservatoire. Just as he started gigging with jazz, soul and hip-hop bands in 2020, the pandemic shut down society and gigs stopped. He returned in summer 2021 playing Brazilian music, and since then, he's lit up the Brazilian music scene in the north of England. First with his bossa jazz band Quinteto Gustavo Andrade and in recent times, with his 10 piece big band Gustavo Andrade & The Brasukas.
The Brazukas perform the full spectrum of Brazilian music - Samba, MPB (Música Popular Brasileiro), Bossa Nova, Samba Rock, Axé, Forró,Brazilian soul, Frevo, Rio Jazz-Funk - and feature top musicians from the Leeds jazz/world music scenes who play with bands like Plantfood, Carioca Soul, Orchestra Mambo International, Tempo Feliz, Awen Ensemble, Mangorata and Away From Home. They play Gustavo's arrangements of classic Brazilian music by artists such as Leci Brandao, Seu Jorge, Jorge Ben, Ivete Sangalo, Tim Maia, Tom Jobim, Gilberto Gil, Ed Motta, Alcione and Djavan. There simply is no other Brazilian music band like them in the north. Come down and get some funky samba magic in your soul. Tonight, Portuguese/UK singer Maya Blandy, based in Manchester, joins them onstage for the first time as guest vocalist.
Support comes from Manchester based Brazilian piano accordion maestro Zagotinho Do Acordeon. He and his trio play the popular music called Forró which comes from the north eastern region of Brazil. As well as warming up for the headliners, Zagotinho will also join Gustavo and his band onstage as a special guest on one of their Forró tunes. Another great Brazilian music show in Leeds 100% guaranteed.
