Flux and Hues, at BLANK_ University Centre Leeds, features the work of Khloe Baker and Rhubarbs, a joint exhibition as the recipients of the BLANK_ Ones to Watch Award. These artists were selected for their playful and humorous approaches to their work. From illustrations to ceramics, Flux and Hues brings their work together.
Khloe Baker creates anecdotal illustrations, collecting passing experiences that evoke a sense of belonging or familiarity. Layering paint, coloured pencil and sometimes paper, she creates with an intuitive energy in an effort to capture a fleeting moment. Her affection for buildings and the everyday stories which inhabit them are a repeating motif of her work, documenting incidental scenes such as the snow outside of a bakery, people gathered outside of a cinema, or a haircut in Hyde Park. Khloe's latest series, Self Portraits is a departure from the artists usual role as an onlooker as she places herself within the narrative, sharing people and places which hold significance to her.
Rhubarbs' world is cloaked in garish pinks and brooding greens. At the heart of her work lies a jubilant fusion of creativity and nonconformity, inspired by their intersex identity. Rhubarbs' work invites viewers to consider fertility, and ritualistic madness.
