Scarborough, presented by Leeds Arts Centre, is a play about a forbidden weekend away, where a couple does all the things you might expect a couple to do. But fear is in the air, and they daren't leave their seaside hotel. After all, at just fifteen years old, one of them is just a child... the other their teacher.

The play is the emotional and uncompromising exposure of abusive relationships. It is a stark portrayal of coercion, corruption and control forcing audiences to examine their own attitudes and subconscious bias towards gender, power and the very nature of our relationships.

Written by Fiona Evans the play, which won a Fringe First Award at Edinburgh Festival in 2007, plays with expectations and audience biases. It asks us how we view power and love through a gendered lens, and in keeping with the spirit of Fiona Evans’ work the director has set the second half in the 1980s to extend this concept through time.

The Carriageworks studio is not large, but Brad Akew, set designer, is turning that into a virtue. The whole space will be transformed into a hotel room in Scarborough and the audience will be transported. The cast's ability to inhabit their characters has been matched wonderfully by their sensitivity and willingness to draw out the subtlety and nuance from the text. With such a difficult subject matter, it will make for uncomfortable but enlightening viewing and will leave the audience talking.

Due to the nature of the topic, LAC will be collecting donations for the charity SARSVL (Support After Rape and Sexual Violence Leeds) the dedicated Rape Crisis Centre for all women and girls in Leeds affected by rape and sexual violence. More about SARSVL here.
