Red Ladder Theatre Company presents a wide range of exciting touring shows at alternative theatre venues across Yorkshire this autumn.

As the nights draw in, Red Ladder Local’s autumn programme has something for all ages, from high-octane family fun to a one-woman comedy drag show.

Kailey, written by Bradford-based playwright and producer Kerry Wright, is a comedy drama that revolves around 18-year-old Kailey as she tries to cope while her mum is in prison. Inspired by Wright’s own experiences, Kailey is a bold new play that shines a light on society’s forgotten young people.

In October, theatre performer and writer Margot Przymierska will bring Monument, her one-woman comedy drag show, to Castleford. Set on mysterious construction sites, Monument features audience participation, rap and pickled gherkins, and considers the real cost and purpose of hard work.

From the award-winning champions of children’s theatre, Rubbish Shakespeare Company and Silly History Boys comes Story Forge and a quest to forge three brand-new myths live on stage. Expect clowning, improv, music, and epic cardboard props.

Bringing Red Ladder Local’s autumn season to a close in November, Mutton is a new dark comedy from Brave Words, exploring the life and times of Mary Bateman, aka the Yorkshire Witch, and the relevance of her story to the world today.

Alice Barber, Red Ladder Theatre Company’s creative producer and programmer, said: “What’s great about Red Ladder Local shows is we’re taking theatre, whether it’s a musical, a comedy, a children’s show, or something a bit more hard-hitting, to people in the communities where they live. There’s a real mix of shows and we hope there is something for everyone.”

She added: “This is a great way of encouraging people to come and see new writing and new shows. Tickets are never more than £5 which lowers the average cost, and that can be the difference between somebody going to see a piece of theatre and not.”

Red Ladder Local is part of Leeds-based Red Ladder Theatre Company and has been bringing shows to non-traditional theatrical venues, such as pubs, community centres and church halls, across Yorkshire since 2015.
