PAYF Opera North's La bohème

After selling out its ‘New to Opera’ discounted tickets in record time for its upcoming production of La bohème, Opera North announces its first ‘pay what you can’ performance in Leeds.
On Monday 27 October, people will be able see the opera in full in the historic surroundings of Leeds Grand Theatre at a price which suits their pocket. To enhance the experience further, opportunities will be given to go on a backstage tour before the show starts, an accordionist will serenade people into the theatre, and there will be a chance to meet cast members over a drink afterwards in Kino bar, renamed ‘Café Momus’ especially for the occasion. As with all performances, the company is keen to stress there is no dress code so people can wear what they like and, while the opera is sung in its original Italian, English subtitles will be displayed on either side of the stage.
Laura Canning, General Director, Opera North, said:
“We decided to give people the option of paying what they could afford because we want to give everyone the chance to experience the art-form we love in the way which best meets their needs. With the tickets available through our ‘New to Opera’ scheme selling out so quickly, this felt like the perfect time to see what appetite there was for a performance like this.
“La boheme is a great show for anyone who has never been to see an opera before, with incredible music, relatable characters, a romance that tugs at the heart strings – and an ending that always has audiences reaching for their tissues.”
This production is set among a group of bohemians in Paris in the 1960s and is directed by Phyllida Lloyd of Mamma Mia! fame. Not only will the audience get to hear the renowned Chorus and Orchestra of Opera North, but they will also be able to watch a young international cast, including Chilean soprano Isabela Díaz as Mimì, the seamstress who falls head over heels in love with the poet Rodolfo, sung by American tenor Joshua Blue. Opera North Music Director Garry Walker conducts.
Suggested prices for the ‘pay what you can’ show start at £2 with the option to buy online, over the phone or, if preferred, in person at the Opera North Box Office. The performance joins a host of other accessibility initiatives offered by the company, including audio-described performances with touch tours beforehand, British Sign Language interpreted shows and relaxed options designed for people living with dementia and anyone who prefers a more informal theatre environment.
