Aire to There is a new paid traineeship, where 10 young people from Leeds aged 16-25 will learn the local and international history of the Leeds Waterfront, uncover hidden stories and use their voice to guide others by creating audio tracks for walking and boat tours. It is part of a region wide programme, Ignite Yorkshire, which aims to connect young people and Yorkshire’s industrial stories.

Led by Joe Williams (founder of award-winning Leeds Black History Walks) of Heritage Corner and supported by historical researchers and artists the selected young people will pick the route, choose the stories and perform the audio for the tours. In the process they will commission and work with a sound artist and be at the heart of the creative decisions to make the audio walk.

These audio tours will then be launched to the public in the summer with an outdoor event and exhibition as well as the audio walk being downloadable online.

WHO IS IT FOR?
We are looking for 10 creative, curious and open-minded young people from Leeds (aged 16 - 25) who have questions about how and where history is told.

Please remember this is a traineeship – you don’t need experience to apply! Learning is part of the process, so passion is more important than qualifications. Participants will gain a digital badge to add to their CV.

SO WHY TAKE PART?
This is a paid opportunity, and participants will receive a minimum of £83.16 for the three days, plus any travel expenses. All sessions are planned to take place in central Leeds.

Aire to There is a great opportunity to:

•    Develop your skills in communication, research and audio technology
•    Gain paid experience in the cultural, creative heritage sector
•    Work with artists and creative practitioners on a live project brief
•    Discover hidden histories
•    Meet and work with other young people interested in history, arts and creativity
•    Voice your perspective
•    Shape the story of the city!

Thoughts from participants on our 2020 project, Represent, can be seen in this short film.
