The 80th Anniversary of the D Day Landings

A display for the 80th Anniversary of the D Day Landings 1944 at the museum until 22nd June.

Details for the Allied landings in Normandy started in Spring 1943 including the mapping of the coastline of France, completed by May 1944. Eisenhower made the decision that 6th June would be D Day and at midnight the massive invasion of Europe began.

We have a complete set of the maps on view in the museum.

Insights Lectures: Feast and Famine

The Great Irish Famine had a devastating impact on the population of Ireland, particularly the poor and destitute, who despite their suffering were treated with disdain and contempt. One million people died, and hundreds of thousands were forced to seek relief in the workhouse. The skeletal remains of those who died give testimony to their excruciating hardship and toil, but also of resistance and communal identity.

Re:loaded

Guns are powerful weapons. They can be loaded with meaning, as well as bullets.

Throughout history to the present day, guns have been embellished and intricately decorated; plated in gold and covered with diamonds.

As objects of art, they have been used to campaign for peace, as tokens of love and desire, and as diplomatic gifts between nations.

This thought-provoking pop-up exhibition asks us to reconsider the symbolism of guns.
