Michael Grayshon’s debut solo exhibition, Sound and Fury, offers a résumé of his practice as it has grown in the last year.

We are invited to see drawing as an expanded practice in a mixed-media display of paint, graphite, ink, canvas, paper, and collage.

He brings drawing to painting and painting to drawing in a practice that finds truth in a fundamentally open and intuitive way of making. The pencil does what it wants.

Does music need sound? Does writing need language? Is anger red?

Sound and Fury talks about the ineffable emotions and bodily instinct Michael confronts with the action of drawing. Here, as it was soliloquised by Macbeth, it meditates on how the beauty and the horror, the silence and the roar, of life appear to us at once and in harmony.

About the artist

Michael Grayshon is a final year student of BA Fine Art at the University of Leeds. He works in expressionist, lyrical abstraction.

His studies at university have focused on semiology, persuasive seeing, and the socio-cultural implications of neo-liberalism.

He has just completed a dissertation about the power of maps in the formation of an indigenous nationalist project by Mapuche activists in Chile.
