Calling all fire twirlers! Yorkshire Circus and Open Source Arts are offering an opportunity for fire and light twirlers of all abilities to get out, rehearse their skills and be a part of the fantastic circus community.

Please note this is not an instructor led session or performance. This will be an open session for fire and light twirlers only, allowing individuals to continue training, try new moves and develop new routines in a space without the pressure of an audience. If you are a fire twirler that has been many times before, or a new member of our community we want you to feel welcome and included. Please feel free to ask us any questions either by email, phone, or by speaking to our team around on the night. Our team has a wide variety of circus knowledge and experience, from 10+ years as performers to just starting their journey. We are all there to help each other and hope to see you there!

We are asking attendees to please plan to walk or cycle to Open Source Arts when attending our events. Not only is it friendlier to our environment and less disruptive. We also will have extremely limited parking on site due to our new layout, we hope to reserve the parking spots available for those with additional accessibility requirements, so please be respectful of that before planning your trip.

This activity is supported by Yorkshire Circus & Open Source Arts, via Community Canvas. Community Canvas is a marquee and furniture hire and sale business, and any profit is reinvested back into local community and creative activity. To help support more community and creative activity in West Yorkshire.

If you plan to come and perform fire or any other circus fun then we please ask that you fill out one of our disclaimers below BEFORE attending and email along with any relevant personal insurance documents you have personally to our Circus Development Officer Joe on joe.ferguson@opensourcearts.co.uk

Performer Disclaimer: https://forms.gle/KRVoxZVukJURDbAm8

Fire twirling is dangerous. By coming to this space, we expect you to be respectful, safe and careful, to yourself, others and the environment. You will be responsible for your own activity here, and you take part at your own risk. Our safety crew and fire marshalls will be on hand and brief you with all the important stuff, they are also there to answer your questions so please don’t be shy they don’t bite (mostly)

If you have any questions or queries in the meantime please don’t hesitate to get in contact with us. We can’t wait to see you all again and hope you are excited as we are to be back practicing twirling fire together again under the night sky.

FAQ’s for Performers:

What do I need to do before I arrive?

Please make sure if you plan to practice with your fire props you fill out the disclaimer below before attending Fire Jam and send any relevant insurance documentation you may have to our Circus Development Officer Joe – joe.ferguson@opensourcearts.co.uk

What should I bring with me?

Please make sure you bring all fire equipment you intend to use on the night, your own fuel and containers to dip your equipment. PLEASE NOTE: we are unable to provide any containers or fuel so please make sure you have everything required to use your props safely. Please also ensure you bring a hot drink and a snack if you like and of course your wonderful self!

What do I do when I arrive?

Once you arrive you will be greeted by one of our fire safety team, they will show you to our dipping area and give you a brief on where to dip, where to spin-off and the safe areas for when you are not twirling. We have two performance areas so there will be plenty of chances for you to practice. Just make sure that you’re dipped and have spun-off ready for when someone already performing puts theirs out.

I am new to fire twirling or have done it in the past but I don’t consider myself a performer. Can I still attend?

Ofcourse! We would love to see you here! We are here to offer a safe space for fire twirlers of all abilities, so if you want to come down and get back into it or draw some inspiration from our other attendees please get in touch!

I would like to practice X/Y move that I have never done before…

We ask that all performers follow correct and safe practice whilst attending our fire jams. Please only rehearse moves you are confident with and have either performed on fire previously or un-lit multiple times. Please respect that fire is dangerous and be respectful of yourself, others and the space which you are using. Fire Marshals are there to help if you are unsure of something please contact us before the event or talk to one of our safety team on site.

Can I bring a friend?

Our fire jams are a safe space for new and already established fire spinners to practice new routines and material in a situation without a live audience. Having said that if it would make you feel more comfortable to bring along a friend for support or maybe you need help transporting equipment then yes, we want everyone to be comfortable in the setting and will not turn anyone away. But please try and limit extra numbers to these sessions, please see our Open Fire Jams where we open out to the general public and please do invite as many people as you can!
