On 7-8 July, Yorkshire Dance welcomes international guests to Leeds for a 2-day festival of dance exploring gender, community and identity. Encounters Dancing In Your Shoes Festival boasts an eclectic mix of bold new performances, inspirational talks and exhilarating workshops.

The packed workshop programme is open to all experience levels and includes opportunities to join critically acclaimed artists Jo Fong and Dee Rogers for a workshop exploring the complicated business of feeling different. Dutch artist Jija Sohn to explore the relationship between ability and disability and Hungarian artist Ágnes Grélinger to celebrate the parts of our identity that we sometimes keep hidden.

Headline performances include But First, We are Going to Eat, by Theaterfestival Boulevard and a community cast, connected by their Former Dutch East Indies and Moluccan roots. Cooking is at the heart of this community and the audience is invited to tase food during the performance.

On Saturday 8 July, 3.00pm Performing Gender Double Bill at Leeds Playhouse presents the UK premiere of Nobody Whistles Anymore created by Brina Klampfer, Vita Osojnik and City of Women Festival Slovenia’s newly formed community Company. Following their sold-out performance in 2022, TC Howard and Company of People, an intergenerational group rooted in Chapeltown and Harehills, return to the stage with Epic Stories of Our Everyday.
