New artwork commissions available for disabled artists in West Yorkshire.

In collaboration with Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills, disabled curator and activist Gill Crawshaw is creating a LEEDS 2023 exhibition inspired by the stories of disabled textile workers across West Yorkshire.

She's looking for disabled artists based in West Yorkshire to create new works of art in response to these stories.

Any Work That Wanted Doing takes the lives of disabled workers in the textile industry as its starting point. It will run from 8 Sep 2023 to Feb 2024, at Leeds Industrial Museum.

Gill's research explores the roles of disabled workers in textile manufacturing, which has defined the region's identity for centuries. It puts disabled people's stories at the centre, recognising them as active contributors to the past and present of Leeds. The exhibition will give disabled artists an opportunity to make work in response to this research.

If you're a disabled artist, or a group of disabled artists, living or working in West Yorkshire, there are 6 commissions of £1,500 and 2 micro-commissions of £500 available for each individual or group, to create an artwork in response to the research.

Deadline to submit proposals: midday 24 April 2023 for an exhibition in September. Part of LEEDS 2023 Year of Culture.
