The Sculpture Gallery New Guest Launch: Mark Gibbs

Please come and join us on Thursday 1st August when we’ll be hosting our regular First Thursday of the Month launch, with drinks between 5:30pm and 8:30pm.

Our new Guest Artist for the month – Mark Gibbs – is an exciting sculptor, drawing inspiration from the shapes, patterns and behaviours in the natural world.

The variety of materials he employs is astounding, ranging from recycled wire and paper to kitchen foil, ceramics, old batteries, ash, banknotes, cowry shells, and fossil shark teeth.

From Cocoon to Loom: Picturing the Chinese Silk Trade

Explore the ingenious process of silk production, weaving and trade through historic paintings, textiles, books – and discover where the magic begins, in the silkworm’s cocoon itself.

At its heart of this small temporary display, a suite of 19th-century watercolours from the Clemens N. Nathan Collection depicts the traditional process of making silk in China, from rearing silkworms to fabricating the final garments.

We've been closed since November 2023 for the first significant refurbishment in our thirty-year history. Working with Leeds-based Group Ginger architects, the renovations have focused on creating more welcoming spaces for visitors, with enhanced events, creativity and meeting rooms.
