Get Into Comics is a series of interactive, mobile art installations that allows the public to enter into an oversized comics panel and create their own story. The installations and a series of free workshops will appear at November’s Thought Bubble Convention in 2015, Leeds Inspired are supporting the project with a £8,850 grant.
Visitors will take part in classic war stories, smoky detective noir mysteries, shadowy graveyard horror and action-packed superhero genres. Using specially constructed 3D booths (designed by Tom Eglington) participants can literally step into the centre of the action. The installations encourage all ages to get involved, giving the perfect photo opportunity for visitors to this internationally acclaimed annual event.
Speech balloons, thought bubbles and sound effects will be provided to allow people to get creative and customise their experience, providing responses to the scenes created. Before they know it, novices will be creating their own living comic.
The eight, easy-to-assemble booths will be placed around Leeds and the surrounding area prior to and during Thought Bubble festival as a way to highlight the comic medium. The public will be encouraged to take pictures and videos of themselves, family and friends inside the giant panel.
Thought Bubble are creating a project-specific online gallery and youtube channel and encourage the audience to add their photos to Twitter, Instagram and Facebook with the hashtag #getintocomics, connecting a cross-section of the public with more traditional comic fans. A competition will run during the festival for the most inventive use of the panel, with a prize being awarded at the end of the weekend.
