In October 2014 Peepal Tree Press published a new collection of poetry by Leeds writer Khadijah Ibrahiim and developed a performance work at West Yorkshire Playhouse for Black History Month. Leeds Inspired supported the performance event and workshops with an £8,000 grant.
Khadijah Ibrahiim’s Another Crossing tells the stories of her life, family and the communities of Chapeltown and Harehills, marking Leeds as a place of cultural fusion.
The sold out performance event – a collaboration with musician Chris Campbell, Joe Williams and the choreographer David Hamilton - premiered at West Yorkshire Playhouse and broke venue records for the most books sales in one night. It was followed by a further performance at Seven Arts Centre. This project was accompanied by a series of free writing workshops for the public, aimed at young people and elders.
Featuring the talents of Leeds Young Authors, internationally renowned poet Malika Booker, and poet and live artist Dorothea Smartt, Another Crossing transformed the traditional poetry reading into a riot of music, movement and images, bringing the beats to life.
