Writing Caribbean Life Stories
18 Jan 2021 6pm - 7pm
Using examples of African Caribbean memoirs, writer Katy Massey takes participants through simple tips and tools needed to capture memories and write life stories for you or a relative, resulting in a written legacy your family will have for generations to come.
The hour-long session will cover;
- How to approach life writing.
- How to choose what to write about when looking at a whole life.
- A culturally relevant approach to life writing.
With Katy's pointers, participants will leave the session brimming with ideas for moments and incidents from the lives they want to write about.
Suitable for: This introduction to life writing is suitable for anyone with African Caribbean heritage interested in documenting their own or family stories. Please be prepared to take notes during the session.
About Katy Massey
Katy Massey’s memoir of growing up in Leeds in the 1970s and 1980s Are we home yet? was published by Jacaranda Books in 2020, and in 2019 she contributed to Kit De Waal’s Common People, a collection of working class life writing. As an editor and project leader she has worked to develop and publish neglected voices. This has resulted in two Arts Council-funded memoir anthologies: Tangled Roots: True Life Stories About Mixed Race Britain, which includes contributions from Bernardine Evaristo and Diana Evans, and Who are we now? A collection of true stories about Brexit, with a foreword by Blake Morrison. She worked as a journalist for many years before completing a PhD in Creative Writing at Newcastle University in 2010.
Writing Caribbean Life Stories is a part of Jamaica Society Leeds 'It's Your Heritage' series made possible with National Lottery Heritage Fund support.
